Compared to the usual 300-500 annual book challenges they receive, the number of challenges clocked in at 729 complaints levied against 1,527 different books in 2021. The number of books being challenged has reached an unprecedented high, per The American Library Association. They are being used to facilitate the censorship of books in classrooms and school libraries. Many of these gag orders address the inclusion of critical race theory and LGBTQ themes in school. Though only seven states have passed such laws, the number of proposed bills is 250 percent higher than in 2021. According to PEN, 36 states have introduced 137 educational gag order bills. The organization attributes the new wave of book bans to the increasing number of "educational gag orders" being passed across the country. PEN America, a literary and free expression rights organization, defines school book banning as "any action taken against a book based on its content and as a result of parent or community challenges, administrative decisions, or in response to direct or threatened action by lawmakers or other governmental officials."

This is a beautiful romance by the talented Kleypas where two people from contrasting social classes come together in love. Derek was previously seen in Then Came You, whose reserved hero, Alex Raiford, was more to my liking. Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas features one of her most beloved characters, Derek Craven. There is no really convenient land off the East coast to encourage much beyond coast-hugging fishermen, but there is off the Marid coast, and of course there was Mospheira and Crescent Island before the humans landed, off the west. Cherryh (Author) (619) The third novel in Cherryh’s Foreigner space opera series, a groundbreaking tale of first contact and its consequences Six months have passed since the reappearance of the starship Phoenixthe same ship which brought a colony of humans to the hostile environment of alien atevi nearly two hundred years ago. Geologically speaking, the Continent is assembled out of at least 3 big pieces, former independent landmasses having rammed together from the south and east, hence the modest mountain range separating the Marid from the rest of the continent, and the really impressive range separating the East from the rest of the continent. There’s some ‘new’ land probably along an oceanic ridge clear to the far side of the planet, and the Southern Isle below the Marid is about as large as Mospheira, which is about half the size of Australia, as I view it. * Defender (2001) - Locus SF Award nominee, 2002 * Invader (1995) - Locus SF Award nominee, 1996 * Foreigner (1994) - Locus SF Award nominee, 1995 Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influencesbiographical, historical, and literaryto enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. Lewes was in an open marriage, and he and Eliot soon became a couple, traveling to Germany together as a “honeymoon” and living as husband and wife, despite the fact that Lewes never divorced his previous wife. She spent time living alone in Geneva before moving to London, where she worked as the editor of a progressive literary journal named The Westminster Review. She began translating works of German theology into English and publishing short reviews in periodicals. As a young woman she became socially involved with a group of agnostics and political radicals. After this point she continued to read widely, the results of which are palpable in her writing, which is intellectually sophisticated and filled with references to a diverse array of knowledge. She received an unusually extensive education for a girl at the time, although only up until the age of 16. George Eliot was the daughter of an estate manager in Warwickshire. |
